Does Medicare Cover Weight Loss Drugs? The $50 Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Explained
Find out who qualifies for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, which weight loss medications are covered, and how to maintain proper nutrition while taking GLP-1 medications.
If you've been interested in GLP-1 weight loss medications but haven't qualified for coverage through Medicare Part D, a new program may provide another option.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program allows eligible Medicare beneficiaries to access certain weight loss medications for a $50 monthly copay, even without a diabetes or sleep apnea diagnosis.
Courtney, our pharmacy manager at our Belew Drugs Asheville Highway location in Knoxville, Tennessee, explains what you need to know about this new Medicare weight loss coverage option.
She also shares important GLP-1 diet tips, including how to maintain adequate protein, hydration, fiber and essential nutrients while taking these medications.
Whether you're considering treatment or have already started taking a GLP-1 medication, understanding your coverage and nutritional needs can help you make informed decisions about your health.
What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a temporary federal program designed to expand access to certain prescription weight loss medications for qualifying Medicare beneficiaries.
The program began July 1, 2026, and is currently scheduled to continue through December 31, 2027.
Traditionally, Medicare Part D has generally excluded medications prescribed solely for weight loss, although certain GLP-1 medications may be covered when prescribed for other approved medical conditions.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge provides an additional coverage pathway for qualifying patients who previously could not obtain these medications through their regular Medicare prescription coverage.
Eligible patients can access certain medications for a $50 copay for a monthly supply.
Although Medicare Part D enrollment is required, the Bridge Program operates separately from regular Part D prescription benefits.
Who Qualifies for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?
One of the program's significant benefits is that qualifying patients do not need diabetes or sleep apnea to participate.
However, Medicare GLP-1 eligibility depends on your body mass index (BMI), medical history and Medicare prescription coverage.
You must be at least 18 years old, have eligible Medicare Part D coverage and meet at least one of the following medical criteria when starting GLP-1 therapy:
BMI of 35 or higher: No additional qualifying medical condition is required.
BMI of 30 or higher: You must also have a qualifying medical condition, such as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure or chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or higher.
BMI of 27 or higher: You must also have a qualifying medical condition, such as prediabetes, a previous heart attack, a previous stroke or symptomatic peripheral artery disease.
Additional eligibility restrictions apply.
Patients who already receive GLP-1 medications through their Medicare Part D plans are not eligible for the Bridge Program.
Patients with certain diagnoses, including type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea and specific fatty liver disease indications, are also excluded because GLP-1 treatment for those conditions may qualify for regular Part D coverage.
Your healthcare provider can review your medical history and determine whether you meet the program's requirements.
Not sure whether you qualify? Visit the official Medicare GLP-1 Bridge website to review the requirements and use Medicare's eligibility questionnaire.
Does Medicare Cover Wegovy and Zepbound for Weight Loss?
Yes. Eligible patients can access certain weight loss medications through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.
Currently, the program includes:
Wegovy: Eligible injectable and oral formulations.
Zepbound: The KwikPen formulation only.
Foundayo: Eligible oral formulations.
Not every GLP-1 medication or formulation is included. For example, single-dose Zepbound pens and vials are excluded from the program.
Your prescriber can determine which medication is medically appropriate for you.
How Do You Get the $50 GLP-1 Copay?
If you believe you qualify for Medicare weight loss medication coverage through the Bridge Program, start by speaking with your healthcare provider.
Your provider will need to evaluate your eligibility, prescribe an eligible medication and complete the required prior authorization process when requested.
Your provider must also certify that you're using the medication alongside appropriate nutrition and physical activity.
Once approved, you can fill your eligible prescription for a $50 monthly copay.
Because the Bridge operates separately from regular Medicare Part D benefits, your $50 payment does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket spending limit. Other assistance programs, including Medicare Extra Help, cannot lower this copay.
Eligible patients can fill approved Medicare GLP-1 Bridge prescriptions at all four Belew Drugs locations.
GLP-1 Diet Tips: What Should You Eat While Taking Weight Loss Medications?
Getting access to treatment is only one part of maintaining your health.
GLP-1 medications reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. Although these effects can support weight management, they may also make it harder to consume adequate amounts of food, fluids and essential nutrients.
Courtney recommends paying particular attention to four areas while taking GLP-1 medications: protein, hydration, fiber and overall nutritional intake.
1. Prioritize Protein to Help Maintain Muscle
When your appetite decreases, you may unintentionally consume less protein than your body needs.
Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, supporting tissue repair and keeping your body functioning properly.
This is particularly important during weight loss, when patients may lose both body fat and muscle.
Consider incorporating protein-rich foods into your meals, such as:
Eggs and Greek yogurt
Chicken and fish
Lean meats
Cottage cheese
Beans and other appropriate protein sources
If you struggle to finish larger meals, eating smaller, nutrient-dense meals throughout the day may help.
Your healthcare provider or registered dietitian can help determine your appropriate daily protein intake, especially if you have kidney disease or other conditions that affect your nutritional needs.
Appropriate strength-building activity can also help maintain muscle during weight loss.
2. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
Adequate hydration is another important consideration during GLP-1 treatment.
Because these medications decrease appetite, some patients also find themselves drinking less throughout the day.
Additionally, digestive side effects such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea can increase the risk of dehydration.
Keep water nearby and make drinking fluids a regular part of your daily routine.
Pay attention to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, dark urine and dry mouth.
If you have kidney disease, heart failure or another medical condition requiring fluid restrictions, follow your healthcare provider's individualized hydration recommendations.
3. Get Enough Fiber to Support Digestive Health
GLP-1 medications slow stomach emptying and can contribute to digestive side effects, including nausea, bloating and constipation.
Getting adequate fiber can support regular bowel movements and overall digestive health.
Try including fiber-rich foods such as:
Fruits and vegetables
Whole grains and oats
Beans and lentils
Nuts and seeds, if tolerated
However, increasing fiber too quickly may worsen bloating or digestive discomfort.
Introduce fiber gradually, maintain adequate hydration and pay attention to how your body responds.
If you're experiencing significant nausea or fullness, large meals and high-fiber foods may temporarily make symptoms worse.
Persistent constipation or other digestive issues should be discussed with your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
4. Make Sure You're Getting Essential Vitamins and Minerals
When you're eating less, it's important to make sure you're still receiving the nutrients your body needs.
A reduced appetite can sometimes make it difficult to consume enough essential vitamins and minerals through your regular diet.
While nutrient-dense foods should remain your foundation, some patients may benefit from a multivitamin when dietary intake isn't meeting their nutritional needs.
At Belew Drugs, Courtney highlights two supplements available at our pharmacy:
Superior Women's Multivitamin
Superior Men's Multivitamin
Courtney also discusses digestive enzymes and their role in helping the body break down food.
Digestive enzymes help break down certain components of food during digestion. However, digestive enzyme supplements have not been established as a treatment for the delayed stomach emptying caused by GLP-1 medications.
A multivitamin cannot replace a balanced diet or adequate protein and hydration.
Before adding vitamins or digestive supplements, consult your pharmacist. We can review your medications, assess potential interactions and help determine which products may be appropriate for your nutritional needs.
