At Belew Drugs, we’ve long offered Vitamin B-12 injections (cyanocobalamin) as part of our wellness services.
Now, we’re excited to also offer a methylated form of B-12 (methylcobalamin)—giving patients more options based on their individual needs.
What’s the Difference?
Methylated B-12 (Methylcobalamin): This is the active form of B-12 that the body can use directly. Some individuals may prefer this option, especially if they have difficulty converting B-12 into its active form.
Standard B-12 (Cyanocobalamin): This is the traditional and widely used form of B-12. The body converts it into an active form after administration.
Why B-12 Matters
Vitamin B-12 plays an important role in:
Energy production
Red blood cell formation
Nervous system function
Some individuals may not get enough B-12 or may have difficulty maintaining adequate levels.
Who Might Consider B-12?
B-12 supplementation may be appropriate for individuals who:
Have been told they are low in B-12
Follow a vegetarian or vegan diet
Have certain absorption concerns
Take medications that may affect B-12 levels
Are looking for general wellness support
Our pharmacists can help you decide which option may be appropriate for you.
Medication Considerations
Some commonly used medications may affect Vitamin B-12 levels over time. Examples may include:
Acid-reducing medications (such as proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers)
Certain diabetes medications (such as metformin)
Long-term use of some medications that affect nutrient absorption
If you take any ongoing medications, ask our pharmacists if B-12 support may be appropriate for you.
Why Shots Instead of Oral Form?
Vitamin B-12 injections deliver B-12 directly into the body, bypassing the digestive system. This can be especially beneficial for individuals who have difficulty absorbing B-12 from oral supplements or tend who to forget their daily dose.
