Using Nasal Sprays the Right Way During Allergy Season
Allergy season in East Tennessee often brings congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal irritation. Nasal sprays are commonly used to support nasal comfort, moisture, and allergy symptom control. Whether you are using a saline spray, an antihistamine spray, or a steroid nasal spray, proper technique matters.
Nasal sprays are most effective when they are used correctly and consistently.
Prepare Your Nasal Passages
Before using a nasal spray, gently clear your nose. Blowing your nose or using a saline rinse can help remove mucus so the spray can reach the inside of the nasal passages more evenly.
If you are using a nasal spray for the first time or have not used it in several days, priming the spray is important.
For squeeze bottles, spray a few times until a fine mist appears. For pump sprays, press the pump until an even spray is released.
How to Use a Nasal Spray Correctly
Using the proper technique can help the spray work as intended and may reduce irritation.
Hand Position
Use your right hand to spray into your left nostril and your left hand to spray into your right nostril. This helps direct the spray away from the center of your nose.
Aim the Spray
Point the nozzle toward the outer wall of your nose rather than straight up or toward the middle. This helps distribute the spray more comfortably inside the nasal passage.
Body Position
Keep your head upright and slightly tilted forward. Avoid tilting your head back, which can cause the spray to run down your throat.
Breathing Technique
After spraying, sniff gently. Avoid strong inhalation, which can pull the spray into your throat rather than keeping it in the nasal passages.
Follow Product Directions
Use the spray only as directed on the package and repeat in the other nostril if indicated.
Why Proper Technique Matters
Using a nasal spray correctly can help improve comfort and may reduce common issues such as throat drip, nasal irritation, or nosebleeds. Consistent and proper use also helps ensure the spray is being used as intended.
